Spirit Companionship Basics: Protections
Before you can get into communicating with spirits, it is highly recommended that you have protections in place. As conjurers, we do as much as possible to ensure the spirit we match you with is safe. However, we are not with you 24/7 or within your space. We can’t know what spirits or energies are around you. Plenty of unbound spirits are more than amicable, but we’re more worried about malicious spirits near you that can get in the way of your companionship journey. This is why, before communicating, we’re focusing on protections first. For clarity, I will also be referring to these protections as wards.
Obligatory disclaimer: These are the methods that have worked for me. Magic is a very personal practice, so what works for me may not work for you. Please take the time to research other methods and even tailor my own suggestions to fit you!
There are plenty of ways to create protections for yourself. Easy ways include asking your deities and spirit guides to protect you when communicating with your spirits. Ask them to keep any beings that are not for your highest and best good to stay out of your protections.
Another way is a physical approach. Use materials such as protection sprays and crystals to ward your space. With protection sprays, spray the perimeter of the space you wish to protect. I use this approach when in a large room and only want a particular area to have extra protection. With crystals, I prefer a combination of black tourmaline and selenite. I put black tourmaline in each corner of the room I would like to protect and then put a piece of selenite between them. This creates a pattern of black tourmaline, selenite, black tourmaline, selenite… you get the picture. When all is put in place, visualize the crystals connecting to each other and erecting a wall of protection that also connects above you so that you are in a dome of protection. You could also use more materials such as runes, sigils, etc., but protection sprays and crystals are my favorite physical approaches.
Finally, an energetic ward is the most versatile but less beginner-friendly method. The following will be a very simplified tutorial on basic energy work and using this energy to ward your space.
Hold your hands out in front of you, palms facing each other as if you’re holding a ball.
Visualize a ball in the middle. It can be as large and small as needed.
Play around with this ball, visualizing and paying attention to any sensations you feel.
Congratulations! You’re doing energy work.
Next, we’re going to practice expanding this ball.
Create the ball of energy as you did before.
Move your hands away from each other, visualizing the ball getting bigger as your hands get further apart.
Play around with expanding and shrinking the ball, paying attention to any sensations you feel.
Expand the ball even more by visualizing the ball engulfing you. This will be the foundation for your ward. Even further, you can expand the ball to encompass the whole room you’re in for a larger ward.
Once you have this down, we can move on to the next step, where we will imbue this ball of energy with the intent to protect the space inside it.
Expand your ball of energy to encompass everything you want to be protected. You can start with just yourself.
When your ball of energy feels like it is surrounding whatever you chose it to cover, you can start imbuing your intent into it.
Imbue your intent into your energy ball using positive affirmations. You can say something like, “Only energy that is meant for my highest and best good can come through this ward.” Repeat whatever your chosen saying is (either mentally or out loud) until the ball of energy feels like a solid protection around you.
Put any more stipulations you want on your ward at this point. For example, you can say, “This ward will return malicious attacks and energy to the sender.”, “This ward will take in ambient and/or negative energy and transmute it into energy it can use to sustain itself.” etc.
Congratulations! You’ve created an energetic ward. This very simple ward may not protect you from stronger malevolent energy, but it is a start! When you’re done creating a ward it is also recommended to cleanse to push out any remaining unwanted energies. You can read more about cleansing here.
