Spirit Companionship Basics: Companionship for the Right Reasons
Are you interested in getting into spirit companionship but don’t know where to start? Well, there’s one thing you need to evaluate about yourself before getting into it. That is your motives.
In my time as a divination and conjuring shop for spirit companions, I’ve come across very disrespectful attitudes towards spirits in which they are merely treated as objects. It has come to a point where there is an open support group for those spirits who have been treated this way in our resort realm. So, I wanted to take this time to help you evaluate your motives for spirit companionship.
The first question is, what are your goals for companionship? My own personal goal was to make connections with other beings. However, other people go into companionship expecting much more such as power or wish granting. While there are definitely some spirits who have the abilities to help with that, they aren’t miracle workers. In my personal experience, something like wish granting comes in the form of the spirit helping you change bad habits or bringing opportunities to you that you still have to take yourself. For example, you might see a job posting for the job of your dreams. That job isn’t going to land in your lap out of nowhere. It’s still going to take applying, interviewing, and continuing to work hard in the job itself. This is where your spirit companions (also called a spirit family) can often step in. They can help you prepare, help give you a boost of confidence, and be moral support throughout it all. If you’re looking for a companion just so they can be useful to you, spirit companionship will not be right for you. Spirit companionship is about making connections first and foremost. Your companions can (and usually do) choose to help you, but it’s never a guarantee. Especially if you don’t treat them with the respect they deserve.
Second, what are you expecting from your companion? People often come into the practice of spirit companionship expecting great big manifestations like seeing their companions very clearly or hearing their voices. However, that is usually not the case. It has taken years for me to hear an actual “voice” in all my time in spirit work, and some experienced workers still do not physically hear voices. There are a handful of people that come to believe that their companion doesn’t exist just because they don’t manifest in the way they want or are expecting. These skills take time. In my case, having companions was what helped me actually build my skills. I came into this knowing I may or may not experience the same manifestations as everyone else, and that’s helped me work through any frustrations I had.
Third, what are you going to do when your expectations are not met? I have heard many stories of people just throwing away their bonds with their spirit companions just because their expectations were not met. Your relationship with your spirit companion is the same as any other bond you could have with someone on this Earth. How would you like it if someone just completely cut you off just because you weren’t doing what they wanted from you? That is what plenty of spirits go through every day. There are many options you could do, but the one I recommend the most is to try and reevaluate your expectations and to continue trying to make things work with your companion. Everything comes down to communication. Communication is another important aspect, but that is something that can be covered at a later time.
Overall, spirit companionship is rooted in one thing: respect. Do not treat your spirit companions as objects that are there to only function as your slave. That is not ethical and it is abusive. Do not throw away the bond that you promised to make just because your companion didn’t meet your expectations. Treat spirits with the same respect you would extend to any of your friends here.
