Spirit Companionship Basics: Cleansing

Working with spirits and the metaphysical in general can lead to a lot of stagnant and maybe even negative and unwanted energies. You’ll want to know how to cleanse your space from these energies.

Step 1: When to Cleanse

While it’s a good idea to cleanse regularly, you may want to realize when you should cleanse. As you start immersing yourself further into energy work, you’ll begin to sense when your space and tools feel “off.” That would be an excellent time to cleanse. You may also start to see your tools like a Tarot deck coming up with answers that make no sense. It would be a good idea to cleanse the tool before exploring other options on why the deck isn’t making sense to you.

Step 2: Protections

You can read more about this step with our protection guide here. This step is essential to keep unwanted energies out as you cleanse since right after you cleanse the unwanted energies can come right back without anything keeping them out.

Step 3: Choosing Your Cleansing Method

There are many cleansing methods, so choose what feels right for you. Just be sure to research particular cleansing methods to ensure they are open and not closed practices such as smudging. These methods are also what I was able to come up with at the top of my head. There may be more methods you’re willing to try. Feel free to experiment and find what feels right for you!

  1. Incense Cleansing - Find an incense that you enjoy. It does not necessarily need to be an incense specifically for cleansing. I have always believed that any incense that brings you joy creates pure and loving energy that is enough to combat any unwanted energies. If you’re cleansing a space, you can either leave the incense burning in an incense holder, or you can walk around the room while waving the incense, especially if any specific areas within the room feel more “off” than others. For tool cleansing, you can wave the incense around the tool or wave the tool over the incense to catch the incense smoke.

  2. Sprays - There are many cleansing sprays available. All you would need to do is spray it around the room or on the tools you wish to cleanse. Again, you can just find a spray you enjoy.

  3. Sound Cleansing - One of my favorite ways! While you could use those videos that are meant for cleansing with the fancy frequencies, if you feel more called to using your own playlist, then go ahead! Put the music as loud as you can handle, and let the music fill up your space! Put on the music that matches what kind of energy you’re trying to bring in. For example, if you want to bring in happy energy, it would be best not to play a sad playlist. You could honestly build a playlist full of uplifting songs you like and call it your cleansing playlist! For tool cleansing, have the tools close to your speakers.

  4. Fresh Air - The simplest way to cleanse space. Just let the room air itself out for a bit. For tools, bring the tools closer to the window or bring them outside.

Step 4: Checking Your Space

Now that you’ve cleansed your space and tools, it’s time to recheck them for any unwanted energies. They should feel energetically lighter. No worries if you can’t feel anything. Energy work takes time and practice. Just keep checking your tools and space periodically, and you’ll start to notice the differences eventually.
