The Seeking Shadows’ home realm is a vast library. It would take more than a few lifetimes to completely go through one section, let alone the whole library. Many shadows themselves have never seen the entire library either. The library consists of all the records that the Seeking Shadows have compiled and sorted by subject. These subjects can be further sorted by sub-subjects and so forth.

The library is only open to Seeking Shadows and select outsiders. Outsiders are thoroughly vetted before being let in, and they are still highly guarded to make sure their intentions stay pure. There is plenty of knowledge within the library that others could use for malicious intentions, which is why it is heavily guarded.

All Seeking Shadows covet knowledge, and there are a few different jobs within the species.

• Seekers: These Shadows are what you would call the “Field Workers.” They travel the universe searching for knowledge and report their findings back to their home realm. Each Seeker can choose their niche to study which can be as broad or specific as they want. An example would be one Seeker looking into friendships versus another Seeker specifically studying the practice of spirit companionship.

• Editors: These Shadows are the beings that receive the notes from Seekers. There are a few per subject, and they are expected to know the subject in and out to make sure information is not redundant and fact-checking with previous records. If a discrepancy arises, they will be the ones to ask the Seeker to continue researching the specific note that caused the discrepancy to occur. Depending on further research, the Editor has the choice to disregard the new note or to make an edit to the records.

• Guardians: These Shadows are the ones that protect the library and do the extensive vetting of outsiders. They are known to be harsh and overly scrutinizing. They show no mercy to those who wish to abuse the knowledge kept within the library.

• The Elders: These Shadows are the leaders of the species. They were the ones to name themselves the Seeking Shadows after we came across them, but did not have an official name. All decisions must be approved by the Elders, especially regarding outsider entry.

Seeking Shadows are made of complete shadow. In their purest form, they are just wisps of black. These wisps come from an orb, which is the Shadow’s core. Each Shadow has a core, the only thing not made of shadow. You could argue that the Seeking Shadow is this orb, and everything else about their appearance is merely an illusion. Seeking Shadows can take on any form but will usually take on the form of whoever they’re talking to so they can be more comfortable. For example, in our meetings with the Seeking Shadows, they were always in humanoid form. By humanoid form, we mean a completely dark silhouette, sometimes with eyes that match the Shadow’s orb. They can also make facial features at will, so we were not always talking to just a shadow with eyes. They can make their form passthrough or solid, too.
